"He's got her on that show thinking it would be a win for her - but it ended up a draw, unfairly in my opinion, it shouldn't have been a draw. "What happened with that Amy Timlin fight is that Amy's manager is Dave Coldwell who has connections with Matchroom," explained Carly. That at least led to a WBC International title shot with Poland's Dorota Norek - and this time Carly was a unanimous winner. One judge agreed, one scored a draw, while Bob Williams' 96-95 verdict in favour of Timlin meant the bout ended drawn. To most observers Carly was the dominant fighter against the highly touted Warwickshire boxer and deserved the judges' decision. That Wembley Arena showdown with Amy Timlin was a painful introduction to the politics of professional boxing. "When he saw me in the white collar fight, which is just a couple of rounds for charity, he said 'I thought you had something about you.' He obviously has an eye for boxing and he encouraged me to go and see his old trainer Siedu (Sid) Siadankay at North Mersey ABC. "He stopped when we had our first child Ayden, and when I started boxing Paul went and got his coaching badge. "Paul started when he was 13 until he was 19," Carly explained. And that hobby went from just doing a charity fight and escalating," she smiles. I had a little bit of free time - and in that free time I took up a hobby. "I was taking time out from nursing after having Thomas, my second child. It has been a dramatic rise for a driven individual who first pulled on a pair of boxing gloves for a laugh - encouraged by her partner Paul. She then turned pro, making her debut at Greenbank Sports Academy in May 2019.įour fights and 17-months later she was walking out at Wembley Arena on the undercard of a Derek Chisora-Oleksandr Usyk bill. Within 18-months she'd reached an ABA final (and was robbed of a decision), boxed for England in the GB Championships and won a silver medal at the Eindhoven International Box Cup. An Alder Hey paediatric nurse, she entered a charity white collar boxing event at the age of 29.

The idea of stepping in the shoes of a Hogwarts student sounds incredibly exciting, and it's perhaps surprising that a game like Hogwarts Legacy did not come out when the franchise was at its peak. Judging by everything revealed during the State of Play event, Hogwarts Legacy is turning out to be a dream come true for many Harry Potter fans all around the world. Avalanche Software might even consider creating a basic version of Quidditch and building upon it in subsequent games. They may also be saving it as a special surprise, and considering how the game feels like a love letter to Harry Potter, it would be disappointing to not see Quidditch in some form. It’s unclear if Quidditch will be a part of Hogwarts Legacy, but the developers probably would have revealed it by now as it can be a big selling point for some players. It seems like there will be some challenges or in-game activities related to broom flight, and hopefully, Avalanche Software will reveal more about this feature in the coming months. I estimate that the loss of their physical presence slashed total daily spending at city center restaurants, bars and shops by more than half. During the pandemic, the overwhelming share of employees who shifted to telecommuting previously worked in offices in cities. Growth of city centers are going to stall. What other impacts should we watch for in this transition to more remote work? They face bleak prospects if their skills and work experience erode during an extended shutdown and beyond. At the same time, those unable to work from home – either because of the nature of their jobs, or because they lack suitable space or internet connections – are being left behind. Our results show that more educated, higher-earning employees are far more likely to work from home – so they are continuing to get paid, develop their skills and advance their careers. Taken together, this is generating a time bomb for inequality. The remaining 35 percent have such poor internet at home – or no internet – that it prevents effective telecommuting. And only 65 percent of Americans reported having fast enough internet capacity to support workable video calls. More than half of those surveyed who are now working from home are doing so either in shared rooms or their bedrooms. Many Americans also lack the facilities or sufficient internet capacity to work effectively from home. They work in retail, healthcare, transport and business services, and need to see customers or work with products or equipment. The remaining (nearly) half cannot work remotely. Only 51 percent of the survey respondents – mostly managers, professionals and financial workers who can carry out their jobs on computers – reported being able to work from home at an efficiency rate of 80 percent or more. Of the dozens of firms I have talked to, the typical plan is that employees will work from home one to three days a week, and come into the office the rest of the time. A recent separate survey of firms from the Survey of Business Uncertainty that I run with the Atlanta Federal Reserve and the University of Chicago indicated that the share of working days spent at home is expected to increase fourfold from pre-COVID levels, from 5 percent to 20 percent. And working remotely is now extremely common, though under very challenging conditions, as I’ve written about earlier.Īnd a number of corporations are developing plans for more work-from-home options beyond the pandemic. The stigma associated with working from home prior to COVID-19 has disappeared. Why do you think working remotely is morphing into a more permanent reality? Working from home is not only economically essential, it is a critical weapon in our fight against COVID-19 – and future pandemics. The economy would have collapsed, forcing us to return to work, reigniting infection rates. Without this historic switch to working from home, the lockdown could never have lasted. How vital was the swift shift to working at home during the COVID crisis? gross domestic product based on their earnings, this enlarged group of work-from-home employees now accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. More strikingly, if we consider the contribution to U.S. Almost twice as many employees are working from home as at work. And the remaining 26 percent – mostly essential service workers – are working on their business premises. About another 33 percent are not working – a testament to the savage impact of the lockdown recession. labor force now working from home full-time. We see an incredible 42 percent of the U.S. Now you’ve identified a new “working-from-home economy.” Why is that? We live in an information economy and a gig economy. And in a related SIEPR Policy Brief, he expands on his findings and offers policymakers and business leaders suggestions for making remote-work a permanent part of the labor landscape. Here, Bloom discusses the societal impacts of working from home and what his latest research reveals. Since the coronavirus crisis broke out, his 2014 study on working from home and ongoing research with other colleagues on business firms have been in high demand as policymakers and others scramble to better understand the shifting dynamics of the workforce and its economic implications. Eberle Professor of Economics in Stanford’s School of Humanities and Sciences and a senior fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR), focuses on labor economics, management practices and uncertainty. There are always a few that are early to the party as well as several that are late to arrive. There is some validity to that, but it’s not 100% accurate. Not much happens and then all of a sudden they all get popping out at once. I had read that hatch day was like watching popcorn popping in the microwave. Quail eggs have less risk of exploding than chicken eggs. Of course, if you are unsure, just let them stay in for the duration. I also noticed that infertile eggs weigh noticeably less than fertile eggs. The shells are very thin and often you can hear or feel them moving inside. On day 15, when I remove them from their turner for hatching, I hold them in my hand for a moment or up to my ear. My method is to let them sit in their turner until day 15 and just let them do their thing. An automatic egg turner with quail rails makes this even easier! Candling Quail EggsĪlthough you can try to candle as early as day 6, I personally never could see anything and stopped looking. Quail eggs are very small and you often set a bunch at a time, so it helps to mark them so you can confirm you’ve turned them all. If you do not have an egg turner (which is a highly recommended investment if you plan to hatch quail eggs with any regularity), eggs need to be manually turned at least three times a day, though five times is better. Marking one side of the egg with an X and the other side with O makes it easier to confirm you’ve turned them all. In a forced air model incubator, aim for a temperature of 100✯. If you are running a still air model incubator, aim for a temperature of 102✯ and rotate the eggs around the incubator when you turn them. If you choose a humid incubation, aim for 45% humidity for the first 15 days and increase to 65% for the final three days.įor temperatures, quail eggs incubate at a similar temperature to chicken eggs. In fact, many people have great success doing a dry incubation with their quail eggs. Humidity levels are one of the first issues with incubating your Coturnix quail eggs. If you have chicks hatching before or after that window, you will want to confirm that your humidity and temperatures in the incubator are accurate. Much like chickens, there is no calendar in that egg, so quail chicks may begin to arrive as early as day 16 and as late as day 20. Crazy, right? The first 17 days are spent incubating and days 18 and sometimes 19 are spent hatching. Incubating Coturnix Quail EggsĬoturnix quail go from being an egg to laying eggs in 8-9 weeks. You simply pop your eggs in the incubator and start the clock (well, if you have an egg turner, otherwise you do have to turn them). The only difference is that it takes less time and you might as well forget about candling. It’s really no different than incubating a chicken egg. Forget fumigation and floating techniques. FAVE PICK: Bluegrass Version by HoneywagonĪnd now to go in the completely opposite direction…how about a bluegrass take on “Thriller”? As a Texas gal, a touch of country is always necessary for my Halloween playlist, and this simplified version by Honeywagon is lovely. I love it as a short and sweet nod to a Halloween classic.Ħ. You might be familiar with dubstep, but did you know dub music is a genre that’s been around since the 1960s? It grew out of the reggae genre and is usually an instrumental remix of a familiar song, like this version of “Thriller” by Richie Phoe. Discovering there was a music video for it too was the icing on the cake. The things that always sucks me in, however, are gruff vocals and heavy guitars, and I cannot get enough of the cover by Leo Moracchioli and C.J. I listen to a bit of everything in the music world, but I don’t spend a lot of time in metal land. FAVE PICK: Metal Version by Leo Moracchioli and C.J. (If you’ve never heard of them, explore their YouTube channel after listening to this cover because they are incredible.) I especially love the tap dancing, which is included in the audio recording on Spotify.Ĥ. The incomparable Wayne Brady sings lead on this jazzy cover by Postmodern Jukebox. This is, by far, my favorite cover I’ve ever heard…and I only discovered it last Halloween season thanks to Dead Air. FAVE PICK: 30s Jazz Version by Postmodern Jukebox, featuring Wayne Brady Even with strings, this cover of “Thriller” still has the energy I love about the original.ģ. I love their gorgeous take on every single one. If you haven’t run across one of Vitamin String Quartet’s many covers of contemporary songs, you might be living under a rock. Contemporary Classical Version by Vitamin String Quartet (Ask anyone who attended Halloween Roast 2011 where we danced to it on repeat in the living room for a solid 30 minutes…) I loved the mashups of songs they did on the show, and this one remains one of my Halloween playlist staples to this day.Ģ. with this version of “Thriller” when I first heard it. I wasn’t a regular viewer of “Glee” when the show was on, but I was OB. Just in case you’ve never seen the full music video, watch it now: (And every year!)īefore we jump into the covers, you need to listen to the classic. Here are 13 covers of “Thriller” you need to listen to before October 31st, plus which three are my top picks for your Halloween playlist this year. Is there any opening lyric more iconic in the Halloween world than this? “Monster Mash” and “This is Halloween” might come close, but absolutely no song gives me the Halloween feels the way “Thriller” by Michael Jackson does.Ībout two years ago, I found myself wondering how many versions of “Monster Mash” existed (spoiler alert: A LOT) so I rounded up more than 50 of them into a blog post, and it’s high time we do the same for “Thriller”. Noire’s 5 million, a far cry from the eight- and nine-figure sales of Red Dead or GTA. Max Payne 3 sold roughly 4.5 million copies in its lifetime, beat out by L.A. Red Dead 2 also uses an iteration of that familiar kill-cam system to display the final shot of a firefight, not to mention the cover system. The shooting and weapon management of Red Dead Redemption 2 is practically lifted straight from Max Payne 3, with Arthur Morgan only able to equip as many weapons as he can physically carry on his model. Red Dead Redemption 2 owes a lot to Max Payne, due to its conflicted hero and several key gameplay elements. The game’s biggest influence has been on Rockstar’s own subsequent titles, both in terms of story and gameplay. It’s not perfect, but Max Payne 3 is easily the best-playing game Rockstar has ever put out. It feels like Max is running through a realistic urban environment, and each segment of the game feels like a shooting gallery designed to account for Max’s diving and rolling. Red Dead Redemption 2 draws a lot of inspiration from Max Payne 3’s shooting and systems. While the game is mostly linear, the city of Sao Paolo is realized with intimate detail. Bullet time continues to be the very best example of it, but Max Payne 3 really shines in the detail it packs into each and every scene. The Max Payne series has also introduced a variety of influential gameplay elements and mechanic. But looking back a decade later, it’s aged remarkably well. Despite strong reviews from critics, some fans grumbled about the new approach to the story. In many ways, the themes and introspection of Max Payne 3 feel far ahead of its time, more in line with modern titles like God of War and The Last of Us Part 2. With most of the story set in Sao Paulo, it weaves in elements of classism and how the widening gap between the rich and poor can lead to broader social consequences. The game’s story is a fascinating window into the inner turmoil of a deeply broken man, but it also touches on other topics. Time after time, Max can’t protect what he’s supposed to - or falls back into that cycle of addiction. While most entries in the genre cast you as a veritable superhero conquering set piece after set piece, Max Payne 3 constantly made its “hero” fail. Part of what’s still so interesting about Max Payne 3 is how different it felt from other shooters of the time. Max Payne 3 is a deep dive into the nature of a man shaped by violence and substance abuse. The entire game feels like a flashy crime drama, but with a relentlessly depressing tone. Max Payne has always been a moody series, but Max Payne 3 embraces a grittier, almost grungy aesthetic. An incident at a bar forces Max to flee New York and take work as a private security contractor in South America. Max Payne 3 takes place nine years after the events of the previous game, showing a Max that’s hit rock bottom, wallowing in alcoholism and painkiller addiction. This resulted in an experience that was markedly different from its predecessors, but no less influential. But Max Payne 3 saw the studio taking over development as well. With the first two Max Payne games, Rockstar published while Remedy developed. “Now, 10 years on, we are still as proud as ever to be part of the story.” “When we began work on the Max Payne 3 score, we could not have predicted the momentous effect it would have on the trajectory of our band and the music we make,” HEALTH said in a statement accompanying the announcement. Max Payne 3 – The Official Soundtrack (Anniversary Edition) will come to digital streaming platforms and vinyl later this year. To mark the occasion, Rockstar announced plans to release a new version of the game’s soundtrack by LA noise-rock band, HEALTH. Ten years ago, Rockstar released one of its most unique and underrated games with Max Payne 3. Rockstar Games is best known for the tremendously popular Grand Theft Auto franchise, but the studio has a lot more than that under its belt. |
